New Dutch Gambling Laws: What You Need to Know

The Dutch Government has officially released their latest regulations for the gambling market, bringing significant changes for players and operators alike. These new laws prohibit the use of sports teams in advertisements, but still allow for sponsorships. Additionally, there are updates to rules regarding bonuses and betting restrictions.

These upcoming regulations outline the guidelines for online gambling in the Netherlands once they are passed later this year. Initially, athletes were banned from appearing in gambling ads in an effort to protect younger generations who view them as role models. However, after receiving feedback from the public, non-sporting figures were also added to this list.

The government recognized that sports teams have a strong influence on young people and have included them in the ban as well. While these stricter regulations may make it more difficult for operators to advertise, player protection is seen as a top priority.

What Changes Can We Expect?

In addition to advertising restrictions, there are other updates outlined in the new regulations. The cost of obtaining a license has been capped at €48,000 and certain sporting events are now off-limits for betting. These include lower division football matches, youth categories and non-FIFA sanctioned friendly games.

However, major events such as WTA and ATP tennis, domestic football, and horse races are still allowed. Any other events will need to be reviewed beforehand.

Changes to Bonuses and Lotteries

Players who do not opt-in for bonuses will still be eligible for perks. The previous 60-day restriction on players who received interventions for their gambling habits has also been lifted. The government now plans to focus on lighter interventions rather than imposing long-term bans.

Lottery providers no longer need to engage in addiction prevention programs as they were deemed unnecessary. Timed bonuses are also now banned and operators must conduct risk assessments on individual games in their library.

The regulations also outline the steps operators must take when dealing with problematic behavior from players. They have also set technical standards for a self-exclusion system called Cruks.
